IN THE VAULT
Is Old Age A Time To Rest?
What are we doing with the time God has given to us?
Psalms 71:17-18 -- "O God, thou hast taught me from my youth; and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grey-headed, O' God forsake me not, until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation and thy powers to everyone that is to come." Let this
be our prayer as we draw nearer to going home to be with our Lord.
If we were to go and be with the Lord today would we want to go empty-handed to our King or
would we want to bring a gift worthy of him? What gift would be more worthy to lay at his feet than
a soul he died to save? It is the greatest gift because we bring him the reward for his suffering!
Many of us reach old age and feel we must rest from our labors. Our bodies are tired and our minds are weary of so many years of thinking, of struggles, of battling our own flesh, and we want a place to retreat from the hectic pace of life. And yet, there is still work to be done, people to bless, souls dying without hope, and our own families that need what God has planted within us to encourage them as they continue facing struggles we have long forgotten and new challenges we have never faced.
This is not the time for rest. Our rest will come when this body puts on immortality and ceases
to be a burden to us. It's time for reflection on God's goodness to us. This is a time of imparting what God has given us; a time to pass on our heritage for his glory!
Age is not to be a hush-hush affair, but a glorious consummation and celebration of a life centered in Christ and lived in his service. It should be a time of fruit bearing as we put all that God has given us to good use in touching lives for eternity! We should want to go out in a blaze
of glory, with hearts filled with the fire of God and thrilled with the prospect of finally seeing him in
all his power and majesty as we bow in adoration as others did at his birth.
Every year is one step closer to the promised land, and each year is pregnant with promise for those whose heart is set like a flint to do all within our power to serve and honor our Lord.
Age is, after all, only a temporary thing. We have the endless ages of eternity before us, and after trillions of years of our earthly time passes it will only be the beginning!
Let's begin today to put aside all excuses for being less and doing less than God intended for us. Let's move forward toward eternity with Christ leading the way, giving him his just reward.
