Lists of Sins In The Bible

What Is Sin?

I John 3:4 gives a clear definition of sin when it says; "Whoever commits sin transgresses the law; for sin is the transgression of the law." Transgression simply means stepping over the boundaries God sets which are his laws and commandments.  All those laws are given to protect us from ourselves because the sin nature within us loves evil and needs God's direction and his power to overcome our propensity to think, say and do the wrong things. Everybody is born with a conscience so that we know when we are doing wrong.   It is God's safeguard to protect us. Even little babies will look around when a parent leaves 

the room to see if anyone is looking before they do what they were told not to do.  Even though we inherited a sin nature because of the sin of Adam and Eve we can't blame them for how we respond when we are tempted to do wrong.  God has given us the ability to say no to temptation but we have to exercise our will to resist it.It should be quite obvious after observing the world around us that most of us do not resist temptation and so we live sinful lives from birth. The truth is that apart from the help God offers us we are unable to resist the fleshly desires that assault our minds every day.  The Bible makes it clear that we are pawns in the hands of Satan when we surrender our will to him to do evil.


The scriptures below are basically lists of sins, but they hardly encompass all the sins that are shown in scripture. There are sins of commission and omission that mankind is guilty of and will answer for one day. All will be silent in the presence of a Holy God as lives are exposed before the universe and perfect justice will be given and punishment and rewards received. These lists reinforce how gracious God is in forgiving rebellious mankind!


The Ten Commandments


Exodus 20:3 -– Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:4 -– Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
Exodus 20:7 -– Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
Exodus 20:8 -– Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.
Exodus 20:12 -- Honor thy Father and thy Mother.
Exodus 20:13 -- Thou shalt not kill.
Exodus 20:14 – Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Exodus 20:15 – Thou shalt not steal.
Exodus 20:16 – Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Exodus 20:17 – Thou shalt not covet.

Proverbs 6:16-19 - These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,  An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Matthew 15:19 - For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

Mark 7:20-23 - And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 - Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21 - Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery,
fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations,
wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like:
of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.


Colossians 3:5-9  -  Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.


1 Timothy 1:9-10 - Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for men stealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine.

1 Timothy 6:4-5 - He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men 

of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 - This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient 

to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Titus 3:3 - For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

James 2:1 - My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, 

with respect of persons.

These lists alone should be enough to convince us the we are sinners and offensive to God in all his perfection, purity, holiness and power. They stand as an indictment against the human race proving the many scriptures that state man to be impure and 

sinful from birth. Of course, the acceptance of the God of the Bible or rejection of him will reveal what people believe and what they are in their hearts. Jeremiah 17:9 states; “For the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.” Sin is a matter of the heart. The scripture verses concerning our hearts abound through the Bible and there is a warning given to “guard our heart with all diligence for out of our hearts come the issues 

of life.”

This is a brief study of a very important subject that will condemn us on the day of judgment if we refuse to repent of our sins and place our faith and trust in the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed as full payment for our sins on Calvary. The scriptures warn us that today is the day of salvation. We have not been promised that we shall even take the next breath, and yet many continue in sin as if they will live forever or have all the time in the world to get right with God.


Many believe the fallacy that they will repent on their death bed or at least at some unknown time down the road. That is the height of foolishness!

Here is a final word from James 4:13-17 - “Go to now ye that say today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, a buy and sell and get gain; Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow, For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away; For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall do this or do that; But now ye rejoice in your boastings; all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knows to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
